Ha’amonga ‘a Maui Trilithon:

The South Pacific’s equivalent of Stonehenge, the Ha’amonga ‘a Maui (Maui’s Burden) trilithon near Niutoua, is one of the top tourist attractions in the Fiji-Tonga region. It is one of the most intriguing monuments of ancient Polynesia. According to archaeologists and oral history, Tu’itatui dates back to the 11th Tu’i Tonga. The structure consists of three large coralline stones, each weighing about 40 tonnes, arranged into a trilithic gate. You may also take a walking trip northward past several langi (tombs; known as the Langi Heketa). ‘Esi Makafakinanga, one of the famous tomb structures is supposedly Tu’itatui’s backrest. It is believed that Tu’itatui used this one as a shield against attack from behind while he oversaw the trilithon’s construction.

 

Ha’atafu Beach:

Ha’atafu Beach is a beautiful slice of golden sand protected by a reef, well known for surfing. You may enjoy a nice slumber in the hammock or take a dip in the cool sea. The church interiors depict the hyper coloured crucifixion scene behind the altar. The stretch of Fatafehi Rd below the cathedral called Hala Lupe (Way of Doves), named for the mournful singing of the female prisoners (convicted adulterers) who constructed it.
